Handmade Butterfly T-shirt Project

Handmade t-shirts are a great project to keep the kids busy during summer break. Here’s how to make this cool butterfly t-shirt with Heat Transfer Vinyl.

I have been making t-shirts like crazy over here. So many shirts, so little time! Recently I spotted this aqua tank on clearance at Walmart for $5.00. I’ve been putting things together for our vacation, and it’s time to make something special for me to wear!

This Art Nouveau style butterfly graphic is available on the Cricut website, free with standard access membership. To make the shirt, the design has been enlarged, simplified and recolored.

Here’s what to do:

Supplies Needed (affiliate links have been included for your convenience):

  1. Aqua t-shirt or tank top
  2. Heat transfer vinyl in black, light pink (variegated), teal, and aqua (with aqua pattern)
  3. Heat press or iron
  4. Cricut Ironing pad or ironing board
  5. Silicone mat (keeps the warm vinyl from sticking to the iron)
  6. Cricut Maker or other Cricut machine
  7. Standard grip cutting mat
  8. Weeding tool
  9. Scissors

Directions:

  1. Download the free design from my file here: https://design.cricut.com/#/design/99788949
  2. Cut all vinyl according to Cricut directions, placing shiny side of the HTV DOWN on the sticky mat.
  3. Weeding the cut|Designers Sweet Spot|www.designerssweetspot.com
  4. Weed out the design of each color vinyl before assembling. Trim away excess plastic as you work.

  1. Beginning with the variegated pink vinyl butterfly, use the heat press to iron the vinyl on the t-shirt. Place the center of the shirt on the Cricut heat mat. Center the design so it’s about 2″ up from the underarm seam of the top. (I decided after I made my shirt the design should be a bit higher so ignore my design placement in this photo). Cover the design with the silicone mat. Use a temperature setting of 320 degrees on the heat press, and press for 20 seconds. Remove plastic backing while design is still warm.

  5. Add the teal green center to the butterfly positioning the vinyl over the existing black shape, along with the light aqua spots on the wings. Cover and press again for 20 seconds. Remove plastic.

  7. Layer the black body shape over the teal body. Add the black “eye” shapes to the end of the antenna. Cover and press in place.
  8. Position the final aqua spots on the back of the body of the butterfly. Cover and press one more time.
  9. Turn t-shirt over and press again from the back side for 15 seconds to full adhere the design. Don’t forget to use the silicone mat to keep the shirt from scorching.

That’s it! Your design is now ready to wear. The heat transfer vinyl is safe to wash and dry. What a fun project this would be for a birthday party or other event!
